You've submitted your Indian e-Visa application and now you're refreshing your inbox every hour. How do you actually know if your Indian e-Visa was approved? There are two ways to check — and some important things to know about the approval email that catches many travelers off guard.
Method 1: Check Online Using Your Application ID
After submitting your application, you received an Application ID (a long alphanumeric code). Use this to check your status:
- Go to the official Indian e-Visa status page
- Enter your Application ID
- Enter your date of birth and the captcha
- Click "Check Status"
You'll see one of three statuses:
- "Granted" — Congratulations! Your e-Visa is approved. Download and print it.
- "Under Review" — Still being processed. Check again in 24 hours.
- "Not Granted" — Your application was rejected. You can reapply.
Critical:
Screenshot or write down your Application ID immediately after submitting. If you lose it, recovering it is extremely difficult. Some applicants save the confirmation page as a PDF.
Method 2: The Approval Email
When your e-Visa is granted, you'll receive an email from the Indian e-Visa system with an attached PDF — your Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This email is your visa. Here's what to know:
- Check your spam folder. This is the #1 issue — Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo frequently route Indian government emails to spam or junk.
- The email comes from an official government address (typically @gov.in)
- The PDF attachment contains your visa details, photo, passport number, and a barcode
- Print this PDF. You must carry a printed copy when you arrive in India. Immigration will ask for it.
How Long Does Approval Take?
Standard processing takes 72 hours (3 business days). However, actual times vary. US, UK, Canadian, and Australian applicants typically see faster turnaround during non-peak periods. For a detailed breakdown, read our processing time guide.
If it's been more than 5 business days with no update, something may be wrong. Contact the Indian e-Visa helpdesk with your Application ID, or consider using a professional support service to follow up.
What to Do After Approval
- Print 2 copies of your ETA PDF — one for immigration, one backup
- Verify all details — check that your name, passport number, and dates are correct
- Save a digital copy on your phone and cloud storage
- Note the validity dates — your e-Visa has a specific entry window
- Check entry ports — e-Visas are only valid at designated airports and seaports
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my approval email has wrong details?
If your name, passport number, or other details are wrong on the ETA, do NOT travel. You'll need to apply for a fresh e-Visa with correct information. Using an e-Visa with incorrect details can result in entry denial at immigration.
Can I travel with just the email on my phone?
While some immigration officers accept digital copies, Indian immigration officially requires a printed copy of the ETA. Always carry a printed version to avoid issues at the airport.
I never received an email but status shows "Granted"?
Download the ETA directly from the status check page. There should be a "Print ETA" option when your status shows Granted. The email may have been lost or filtered by your email provider.

One small mistake — a name that doesn't match your passport, the wrong occupation, a non-compliant photo, or the wrong visa category — can get your India e-Visa rejected or frozen in review for weeks. Government fees are non-refundable, a rejection can flag your passport for future applications, and most travelers only find out after they've paid and their flight is days away.
Our visa experts check every detail before submission, catch the errors that cause rejections, and back it with 24/7 human support — so you board your flight with total peace of mind.
