If You Already Have a Valid Regular Visa
You do NOT need an e-Visa if your regular visa is:
- Still within its validity period
- Still has available entries (if it's a limited-entry visa)
- Covers the purpose of your visit (tourism, business, etc.)
- Is in your current, valid passport
Simply use your existing regular visa. Having two valid Indian visas simultaneously can actually cause confusion at immigration.
OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) Card Holders
If you have an OCI card, you do not need any visa — including an e-Visa — to enter India. The OCI card provides:
- Lifelong multiple-entry access to India
- No continuous stay limit for most purposes
- The right to work, study, and own property (with some exceptions)
- Entry through any immigration checkpoint, including land borders
OCI Tip:
Even with an OCI card, make sure to re-issue it if you've renewed your passport or if you got the OCI before age 20 (it needs updating after a new passport is issued). Carry both your current passport and OCI card when traveling.
When to Switch to an E-Visa
Consider getting an e-Visa instead of a regular visa if:
- Your regular visa has expired and you need to travel soon (e-Visa is faster)
- You don't have an Indian embassy/consulate nearby
- You don't want to mail your passport for visa processing
- You only need a short-term visa (30 days or 1 year)
- You're entering through a designated airport (most international airports qualify)

Can You Have Both at the Same Time?
