If you're retired and planning a trip, the Indian e-Visa process is straightforward, but there are a few form fields that trip up retirees specifically. Here's everything you need to know.

Which Visa Type for Retired Travelers?

Unless you're visiting for medical treatment, you need an e-Tourist Visa. The three duration options:

• 30-day visa ($97 standard): Perfect for a 2-3 week vacation — Golden Triangle, Goa, or Kerala
• 1-year visa ($129 standard): Great if you might return within a year, or want flexibility to extend your stay up to 90 days
• 5-year visa ($279 standard): Best value if you plan to visit India regularly — ideal for retirees with family in India or who winter in India annually

Filling Out the Application: Retiree-Specific Fields

Occupation

Select "Retired" from the dropdown. This is a standard option and does not negatively affect your application in any way.

Employer / Organization Details

Even though you're retired, the form still asks for employer information. Here's what to enter:

• Organization name: Enter "RETIRED" or your last employer's name
• Organization address: Your home address, or your last employer's address if you remember it
• Designation: "Retired" or your last job title (e.g., "Retired Teacher", "Retired Engineer")
• Phone: Your personal phone number is fine

Reference in India

You'll need to provide a reference person or hotel in India:

• If visiting family: Use their name and address
• If it's a vacation: Use your first hotel's name and address
• If you don't have a hotel yet: You can use a well-known hotel in your first city (booking not required at application time)

Medical Considerations

While not part of the visa application, retired travelers should consider:

The 90-Day Stay Limit

On 1-year and 5-year visas, each visit is limited to 90 continuous days. For retirees spending extended time in India:

• Plan a "visa run" — a quick trip to Nepal, Sri Lanka, or another nearby country before 90 days
• Re-entering India resets your 90-day clock
