India e-Visa for Italian Citizens: Fees, Documents and Name Rules

For a Italian passport the government fees are: 30-day e-Tourist $10 for arrivals from April to June and $25 for the rest of the year; 1-year e-Tourist $40; 5-year e-Tourist $200; e-Business $120; e-Medical $80. A 3% bank charge is added to each. You pay the same amounts whether you apply yourself on the government portal or through a service; a service adds its own fee for checking and submitting the application.

The one in the machine-readable zone, the two lines of characters at the bottom of the passport photo page. For married women this is their own surname, because Italian passports do not replace it with the husband's. Names with an apostrophe, like D'Angelo, appear there without it (DANGELO or D ANGELO, as printed); copy that form.

• Up to 30 days of tourism: the 30-day e-Tourist visa.
• Several trips, or a stay up to 90 days per visit within a year: the 1-year e-Tourist visa ($40).
• Frequent travel over several years: the 5-year e-Tourist visa ($200).
• Any business activity: the e-Business visa ($120), one year, multiple entries.
• Treatment at an Indian hospital: the e-Medical visa ($80), 60 days, three entries, with a hospital letter.

Only travellers who cannot use the e-Visa, for example for employment or long study, apply for a regular visa through the Embassy of India in Rome or the Consulate General in Milan.

You need an ordinary Italian passport valid for at least 6 months from arrival, with 2 blank pages. The Italian identity card (carta d'identità) is not accepted for India. The e-Visa follows the passport, so Italians living in Switzerland, the UK or anywhere else apply the same way.

Apply at least 4 days before arrival; most complete applications are decided within 24–72 hours. In the October–March high season, apply earlier.

Italian applicants are most often held up by:

• Entering a husband's surname. Italian passports show a woman's own surname; use the surname in the machine-readable zone.
• Copying the place of birth with the province code, e.g. "ROMA (RM)". Enter the town only: Roma.
• Typing apostrophes or accents (D'Angelo, Niccolò). The form accepts only letters; follow the machine-readable zone at the bottom of the photo page.
• Uploading a photo of the passport taken at an angle, with glare over the data. Use a flat, well-lit scan saved as PDF.
• Applying fewer than 4 days before the flight. Most complete applications are decided within 24–72 hours, but that is not guaranteed.
• Choosing the 30-day e-Tourist visa for a trip that includes business meetings. Any business activity needs the e-Business visa.
