India e-Visa for Swedish Citizens: Fees, Documents and Name Rules

Use the spelling in the machine-readable zone, the two lines of characters at the bottom of the passport photo page. Björn Åström appears there as AASTROEM and BJOERN, and that is exactly what you type. Do not replace the letters with A and O yourself; follow what the passport prints.

For a Swedish passport the government fees are: 30-day e-Tourist $10 for arrivals from April to June and $25 for the rest of the year; 1-year e-Tourist $40; 5-year e-Tourist $200; e-Business $120; e-Medical $80. A 3% bank charge is added to each. Norwegian, Danish and Finnish passports pay the same standard fees.

• A winter holiday of up to 30 days: the 30-day e-Tourist visa ($25 for arrivals July–March).
• Longer winters in Goa or Kerala, up to 90 days per visit: the 1-year e-Tourist visa ($40).
• Coming back every year: the 5-year e-Tourist visa ($200).
• Business meetings or trade fairs: the e-Business visa ($120).

Only travellers who cannot use the e-Visa, for example for employment or long study, apply for a regular visa through the Embassy of India in Stockholm.

You need an ordinary Swedish passport valid for at least 6 months from arrival, with 2 blank pages. The Swedish national ID card is not accepted for India. The e-Visa follows the passport, so Swedes living in Norway, Denmark or elsewhere apply the same way.

Apply at least 4 days before arrival; most complete applications are decided within 24–72 hours. Leave more time for winter travel between October and March, India's busiest season.

Swedish applicants are most often held up by:

• Typing å, ä or ö. The form accepts only A–Z; copy the name from the machine-readable zone at the bottom of the photo page, where Å is AA, Ä is AE and Ö is OE.
• Entering the personal identity number (personnummer) in the passport number field.
• Writing "Sweden" as place of issue instead of the issuing authority shown in the passport.
• Uploading a phone photo of the passport with glare over the data instead of a flat scan saved as PDF.
• Applying fewer than 4 days before the flight. Most complete applications are decided within 24–72 hours, but that is not guaranteed.
• Choosing the 30-day e-Tourist visa for a trip that includes business meetings. Any business activity needs the e-Business visa.
