India e-Visa for Malaysians: Fees, Documents and How to Apply

Malaysian citizens need a visa for India, and the e-Visa covers holidays, family visits, business trips and medical treatment without a trip to the High Commission. Malaysian passports also have an unusual advantage: on the current Government of India chart, the 30-day e-Tourist visa has no government fee.

Do Malaysians need a visa for India?

Yes. Malaysian passport holders need a visa for every trip to India. The e-Visa is the usual route for tourism, temple and family visits, business meetings, conferences and medical treatment. You apply online at least 4 days before arrival, receive the approval by email, and show it with your passport when you land. There is no appointment and you never post your passport.

Regular paper visas, for purposes the e-Visa doesn't cover, are handled by the High Commission of India, Kuala Lumpur.

How much is the India e-Visa for Malaysian citizens?

These are the Government of India fees for a Malaysian passport, in US dollars:

  • 30-day e-Tourist: no government fee, whatever month you arrive
  • 1-year e-Tourist: $40
  • 5-year e-Tourist: $200
  • e-Business and e-Conference: $120
  • e-Medical and e-Medical Attendant: $80 each

A 3% bank charge is added to each paid fee. Most other passports pay $10 for 30-day arrivals in April–June and $25 for July–March; that seasonal rule doesn't affect Malaysians, because the fee is nil all year. Check the amount shown at the payment step, since the government can revise its chart.

If you apply yourself on the Government of India e-Visa portal, a 30-day e-Tourist visa costs you nothing in government fees. Our all-inclusive price is $97 for 30 days, $129 for 1 year and $279 for 5 years, and $497 for e-Business. On the 30-day visa, that price is our document review and handling. Use the fee calculator to compare.

Which e-Visa should Malaysians choose?

  • 30-day e-Tourist: one trip of up to a month, with two entries allowed within 30 days of your first arrival. With no government fee, it suits a single holiday or family visit.
  • 1-year e-Tourist: multiple entries over 12 months, up to 90 days per visit for most passports. Worth the $40 if you might go back within the year, for Deepavali, weddings or other family events.
  • 5-year e-Tourist: the same rules over 5 years, for frequent visitors.
  • e-Business: meetings, trade fairs and sales visits, with a business card or the Indian company's invitation. Valid for 1 year with multiple entries and stays of up to 180 days. See the e-Business visa guide.
  • e-Medical: treatment at an Indian hospital, valid 60 days from arrival with three entries. Up to 2 family members can come on the e-Medical Attendant visa. See the e-Medical Attendant guide.

An e-Visa cannot be extended or converted once you're in India, so choose the type that covers the whole trip.

How should Malaysians enter their name?

Many Malaysian names have no separate family name, and the passport prints the full name on one line. The e-Visa form has separate fields for surname and given names, and it's easy to split the name wrongly. Some rules that keep it straight:

  • Every part of your name must appear exactly as printed, in the same order, including bin, binti, a/l or a/p.
  • Don't shorten or expand names: if the passport says MOHD, don't write Muhammad, and the reverse.
  • If you're unsure how to split the name, follow the machine-readable lines at the bottom of the bio page. The part before the double chevron (<<) is read as the surname.
  • Enter your place of birth as printed in the passport, even if it shows a state rather than a town.

Our document review checks this split against your passport before anything is submitted.

What documents do Malaysian applicants need?

  • Your Malaysian passport, valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive, with at least 2 blank pages
  • A scan of the passport bio page as a PDF between 10 KB and 300 KB, with the machine-readable lines fully visible
  • A recent photo: square JPEG, plain white background, 10 KB–1 MB, at least 350 × 350 px. Our free photo tool resizes it for you.
  • e-Business: a business card or invitation letter (PDF)
  • e-Medical: a letter from the Indian hospital on its letterhead (PDF)

The photo requirements guide covers the details that most often get a photo rejected.

How long does it take from Malaysia?

Most complete applications are decided within 24 to 72 hours, but this is not guaranteed. Apply at least 4 days before you fly, and earlier for school holidays and festival periods when flights to India fill up. The approval arrives by email; print it or keep it on your phone.

You must land at an airport or seaport approved for e-Visa holders, so check your arrival airport before booking. If you live in Malaysia on another passport, eligibility and fees follow that passport, not your residence. See applying from outside your home country.

Mistakes Malaysian applicants make

When we review applications from Malaysia, these are the details we check first:

  • The name split between surname and given names, as above
  • Paying for a 1-year visa for a single short trip when the 30-day visa has no government fee, or the reverse: three separate 30-day applications in one year when one 1-year visa would cover them
  • A passport with less than 6 months left on the day of arrival
  • A photo with a coloured or patterned background
  • Applying a day or two before the flight

When your passport and photo are ready, start your application, or apply directly on the Government of India e-Visa portal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

How long can Malaysians stay in India?

No. The e-Visa is entirely online. The High Commission only handles regular paper visas.
