India Visa for Austrian Citizens: Fees, Documents and How to Apply

Yes. Austrian citizens need a visa for every trip to India. The e-Visa covers tourism, visits to friends and family, yoga and meditation courses, business meetings, conferences and medical treatment. You apply online at least 4 days before arrival. There is no appointment and you never send your passport anywhere.

You need a passport: the Austrian identity card is not accepted for India. Regular paper visas, for purposes the e-Visa doesn't cover, are handled by the Embassy of India, Vienna.

Austrian passports pay the standard Government of India fees, in US dollars. A 3% bank charge is added to each:

• 30-day e-Tourist: $10 for arrivals April–June, $25 for arrivals July–March
• 1-year e-Tourist: $40
• 5-year e-Tourist: $200
• e-Business and e-Conference: $120
• e-Medical and e-Medical Attendant: $80 each

The 30-day fee depends on your arrival date, not the date you apply. Most Austrians travel to India in the October–March season, when the 30-day visa is $25, so the 1-year visa at $40 is often better value if there's any chance of a second trip.

• 30-day e-Tourist: one holiday of up to a month, with two entries allowed within 30 days of your first arrival.
• 1-year e-Tourist: multiple entries over 12 months, up to 90 days per visit for most passports.
• 5-year e-Tourist: the same rules over 5 years, for frequent visitors.
• e-Business: meetings, trade fairs and sales visits, with an invitation or business card from the Indian company. Valid for 1 year with multiple entries and stays of up to 180 days. See the e-Business visa guide.
• e-Medical: treatment at a recognised Indian hospital, valid 60 days from arrival with three entries, with the hospital's letter. Up to 2 attendants can come on the e-Medical Attendant visa.

An e-Visa cannot be extended or converted in India, so pick the one that covers the whole trip.

The form only accepts plain Latin letters. Type your name the way it appears in the machine-readable zone: the two lines of letters and chevrons (<<) at the bottom of the bio page. There, Austrian passports convert special characters:

• Ä becomes AE (Jäger → JAEGER)
• Ö becomes OE (Böhm → BOEHM)
• Ü becomes UE (Müller → MUELLER)
• ß becomes SS (Strauß → STRAUSS)

Don't simply drop the dots (MULLER), and use the same spelling in every field. Apply the same rule to your place of birth if it has an umlaut, such as Mödling → MOEDLING. If your passport shows an academic title such as Mag. or Dr., leave it out of the name fields: it isn't part of your name in the machine-readable zone.

• Your Austrian passport, valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive, with at least 2 blank pages
• A scan of the passport bio page as a PDF between 10 KB and 300 KB, with the machine-readable lines fully visible
• A recent photo: square JPEG, plain white background, 10 KB–1 MB, at least 350 × 350 px. A standard Austrian passport photo is not square, so it needs cropping; our free photo tool does that for you.
• e-Business: a business card or the Indian company's invitation letter (PDF)
• e-Medical: a letter from the Indian hospital on its letterhead (PDF)

Most complete applications are decided within 24 to 72 hours, but this is not guaranteed. Apply at least 4 days before your arrival date, and earlier for trips over Christmas or in the October–March peak season. The approval arrives by email. When we review applications from Austria, these are the details we check first:

• Umlauts typed as plain vowels (MULLER instead of MUELLER), or a different spelling in different fields
• Place of birth: enter the town as printed in your passport, not just 'Austria'
• A rectangular passport photo uploaded without cropping it to a square
• Applying with the identity card number instead of the passport number
• Dual nationals applying on one passport and travelling on the other
