India Visa for Irish Citizens: Fees, Documents and How to Apply from Ireland

Yes. Irish passport holders need a visa for every trip to India. The Irish passport is eligible for the e-Visa, which covers tourism, visits to family and friends, business meetings, conferences and medical treatment.

You apply online at least 4 days before arrival. There is no appointment and no passport to post. Travel with your passport book: the Irish Passport Card is not a substitute for it on a trip to India.

These are the Government of India fees for an Irish passport, in US dollars. A 3% bank charge is added to each:

• 30-day e-Tourist: $10 for arrivals April–June, $25 for arrivals July–March
• 1-year e-Tourist: $40
• 5-year e-Tourist: $200
• e-Business and e-Conference: $200
• e-Medical and e-Medical Attendant: $80 each

The 30-day fee depends on your arrival date, not the date you apply. For a trip between July and March, the 1-year visa costs only $15 more and covers any return visit within 12 months. Budget carefully for e-Business: most nationalities pay $120, but the government chart sets $200 for Irish passports. If you pay with a euro card, your card company converts the dollar amount at its own rate.

• 30-day e-Tourist: one trip of up to a month, with two entries within 30 days of your first arrival.
• 1-year or 5-year e-Tourist: multiple entries, up to 90 days per visit for most passports.
• e-Business: meetings, trade fairs and supplier visits. Valid for 1 year, multiple entries, stays of up to 180 days. See the e-Business visa guide.

• e-Medical: treatment at an Indian hospital, valid 60 days from arrival with three entries. Up to 2 attendants can travel on the e-Medical Attendant visa.

An e-Visa cannot be extended or converted in India, so choose the type that covers the whole trip.

If you hold both, as many people in Northern Ireland do, the passport you choose changes the price. The 30-day and 1-year fees are the same; the others are not:

• 5-year e-Tourist: $200 Irish, $484 British
• e-Business: $200 Irish, $242 British
• e-Medical: $80 Irish, $129 British

Use the same passport throughout: apply with it, show it at check-in and present it at immigration in India. An e-Visa issued on your Irish passport is not valid with your British one. British-only passport holders can read the India visa guide for UK citizens.

The form only accepts plain letters, so Seán, Siobhán or Ó Súilleabháin can't be typed as printed. Use the spelling in the machine-readable zone, the two lines of letters and chevrons (<<) at the bottom of your bio page, and keep it the same in every field.

If your surname has an apostrophe (O'Brien) or a prefix (Mac, Ní, Ó), copy the spacing from those lines rather than guessing. If you usually go by the English form of an Irish name, or the other way round, use only the version in your passport. See using your full legal name.

• Your Irish passport, valid for at least 6 months from arrival, with at least 2 blank pages
• A scan of the bio page: PDF, 10 KB–300 KB, with the machine-readable lines fully visible
• A recent photo: square JPEG, plain white background, 10 KB–1 MB, at least 350 × 350 px. Our free photo tool crops a standard passport photo to a square.
• e-Business: a business card or the Indian company's invitation letter (PDF)
• e-Medical: a letter from the Indian hospital on its letterhead (PDF)

Most complete applications are decided within 24 to 72 hours, but this is not guaranteed. Apply at least 4 days before you arrive, and earlier for Christmas trips or the October–March peak season. The approval arrives by email. Print it or keep it on your phone, and show it with your passport when you land.

You must enter India at an airport or seaport approved for e-Visa holders, so check where you land, not just where you leave from. The airport arrival guide walks through immigration.

Eligibility and fees follow your passport, not your residence. If you live in Ireland on a different passport, you apply on that passport and pay its fee:

• Indian citizens don't need a visa, and neither do OCI cardholders.
• Former Indian citizens who are now Irish need an e-Visa or an OCI card.
• Everyone else should check their own passport against the list of eligible countries.

You can apply from Ireland whatever your nationality; see applying from outside your home country.

• Names typed with fadas, or anglicised, instead of as in the machine-readable zone
• Dual nationals applying on the Irish passport and travelling on the British one
