What is an OCI Card?

An OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card is a lifelong immigration status granted to people of Indian origin who have taken foreign citizenship (e.g., became US, UK, Canadian, or Australian citizens). OCI cardholders enjoy the right to live and work in India indefinitely, and crucially — they do NOT need any visa to enter India. OCI is not the same as Indian citizenship.

Do OCI Holders Need an India e-Visa?

NO. If you hold a valid OCI card, you do not need an India e-Visa. You can enter India on any international flight by presenting your valid OCI card along with your current foreign passport. Make sure your OCI card is linked to your current passport — if you renewed your passport after getting OCI, you must get the OCI re-issued/re-endorsed to match your new passport.

Who Needs an India e-Visa?

You need an India e-Visa if: (1) You are a foreign citizen without Indian origin, (2) You are of Indian origin but do NOT hold an OCI card, or (3) You hold a PIO (Person of Indian Origin) card issued before 2015 — note: PIO cards are now merged into OCI. Citizens of Pakistan and a few other countries are NOT eligible for e-Visa at all.

How to Check if You Have OCI Status

OCI cards look like small booklets (blue cover) or a sticker in your passport. They are issued by Indian High Commissions and Consulates abroad. If you applied for OCI before 2005, you may have a PIO card — these were automatically converted to OCI status. Check with your nearest Indian Consulate to confirm your current OCI status.

What if My OCI Card is Expired or Missing?

OCI cards themselves do not expire, but they must be re-endorsed when you renew your passport (if issued before 2015). If your OCI booklet is missing or your passport was renewed without re-endorsement, apply for a re-issue at the nearest Indian Consulate. In the meantime, you may need an e-Visa to travel to India while your OCI is being processed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Can OCI holders work in India?

Yes. OCI cardholders can live, study, and work in India on a long-term basis without any restrictions.

Q

Do OCI holders need a return ticket?

OCI holders entering India are not required to show a return ticket, as they have the right of abode.

Q

My child was born abroad — do they get OCI automatically?

Children born outside India to Indian citizen parents or OCI holders may qualify for OCI. Apply at your nearest Indian Consulate.

Q

I have a PIO card from 2010 — is it still valid?

PIO cards issued before 2015 were automatically converted to OCI. You can enter India on your PIO card, but it is recommended to get it converted to an OCI card formally.
